Of the many things which are broken in the world, our relationship with success is high on the list.
In a world full of curated social media posts, milestones, and showing of, something has become lost. Everyone is focused on the one green patch of the neighbours yard which can be seen. The tendency to imagine that green patch as the entire lawn creates a problem.
To live a successful life you do not need to be Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, or invent the next Facebook. In fact, that could be a failing.Yes, the world needs those people, and if you are one of them, this is fantastic for you.
If you aren’t though (which is the vast population), relax and breath. The world needs you too and there is still plenty of room for you to be a RAGING SUCCESS.
At the end of it all, there is only one measure of success that matters. Are you happy?
The world is made up of teams, and the fundamental principle of a team is that every person on it matters EQUALLY. Is the person who spends a career with one company less successful than the person who starts their own company? What about the parent who works parts time so they can spend more time with their children?
Your success may have nothing to do with work or professional progression. It’s perfectly fine for a job to be a means to an end. Recently I was told that success was caring for her parents in their last years. She was able to do this, and felt and immense pride and satisfaction in this.
Whether you’re a graduate in your first year out of school, somewhere mid career, or a veteran looking down the final straight. At the end of it all, there is only one measure of success that matters. Are you happy?
And I don’t mean on a holiday at the beach happy. When you look back on the past, forward to the future, and soak up right now, are you content with how you spent your time? Do you feel a sense of satisfaction that you used the time given to you well?
The biggest causation and between success and happiness that I have seen play out is the value of progress. Are you closer today to your version of success than you were yesterday?
You don’t have to know it perfectly to start, starting anywhere is perfectly fine.
With a little time and thought, you can begin to paint a picture of what success looks like to you. It won’t be perfect, it won’t be finite, and there is a high probability it will shift a little over time. You don’t have to know it perfectly to start, starting anywhere is perfectly fine. At the end of it all, there is only one measure of success that matters. Are you happy?
The beauty of our world is that success looks remarkably different for each individual person. The only failing in life, is to pursue that which has no meaning to you. It saddens me deeply when I see people doing this. It saddens me further when I see the scale at which this is happening.
Success in life is spending your time pursuing things which are important to you.
Wishing you the best in life, and business.
